How To Layer Your Skincare : The Definitive Order

How To Layer Your Skincare : The Definitive Order

You could have the most powerful skincare products in the world sitting on your bathroom shelf and if you are applying them in the wrong order, you are leaving a significant proportion of their results on the table.

Applied incorrectly, even the best active ingredients can be blocked from reaching the skin layers where they need to work. Applied in the right order, each product amplifies the next creating a cumulative effect that is far greater than the sum of its parts.

The Golden Rule: Apply from thinnest to thickest consistency, lightest to most occlusive.

The correct order is always:

  1. Cleanse: Facial Cleansing Gel removes impurities, makeup, SPF, and the day's environmental buildup. A clean, receptive canvas is the non-negotiable foundation of every routine.
  2. Eye Treatment:  Under Eye Gel is applied directly to clean skin before any other serum, allowing its specialised actives to make direct, undiluted contact with the delicate eye area.
  3. Water-Based Serums:  Vitamin B Serum, Vitamin C Serum, Brightening 'C' Serum. Applied to slightly damp skin, these lightweight serums deliver their active ingredients deep into the skin's layers.
  4. Oil-Based Serums: Vitamin A Face Serum, Miracle Anti-Ageing Serum, Corrective Anti-Ageing Serum. Slightly richer in texture, these serums are applied after water-based layers have absorbed.
  5. Moisturiser:  Hydrating Moisturiser is always the final skincare step,  the seal that locks in every layer of active ingredients beneath it and creates a protective moisture barrier for the day or night ahead.
  6. SPF (Morning Only):  Applied after moisturiser, never before. SPF is non-negotiable in the morning without it, the brightening and anti-ageing work of every serum beneath it is significantly undermined.

The 60-Second Rule

Allow approximately 60 seconds between each layer for absorption before applying the next. This is not about waiting for the product to fully dry, it is about giving it enough contact time with the skin to begin absorbing properly before the next layer is added on top. 60 seconds per step adds less than five minutes to your total routine time. The improvement in results it delivers is disproportionately significant.

The Damp Skin Advantage

Apply your first serum to slightly damp skin,  immediately after patting your face dry post-cleanse while a light residual moisture remains. Hyaluronic Acid, present in several Theta Body formulas, is a humectant that works by drawing moisture from its surroundings into the skin. On damp skin, it draws that surface moisture deep into the skin's layers for a visibly amplified plumping and hydrating effect. On completely dry skin, it has significantly less moisture to draw from and the results reflect that. One small habit change. A measurably better outcome.
